Don't waste your money. Just take a piece of paper, fold the edges with, say 1 inch, at both sides, then roll it into a cylinder like a sleeve. Ian there any possibility that you can move the bottom to the surface without cutting any part of it?

Would you consider having the sleeves shortened back to the (for you) maximum tolerable distance of buttons from the sleeve end and then have your tailor let the sleeves out from the shoulder's?
Should be even less effort than your current option three.

That would destroy the pattern matching

If you detach the piece of paper, un-roll it, and then roll it again, sure. That would be the equivalent of taking out the sleeve and shoulder seams to do this.

We could get in there and see how much fabric is in the shoulder; I didn't feel much though. If nothing else works, I might cut the baby in half and go with sleeves that show 1" of cuff and buttons that are 2" from the sleeve cuff, and in that case even a little flexibility from the shoulder could go a long way.

Please go ahead and ask your tailor to do it and report back here

Oh, I see now that you said the coat has a pattern.
If keeping the pattern matching at the shoulders and not having buttons too high on your sleeves are both your priorities then I am afraid it would be best to sell the coat and wait for a better fitting specimen.

I'm willing to give up either; the coat fits excellently otherwise and looks great. But I would say I value the direction of sleeve overlap the least, so if this works I'll let you know!
