Purpose of having cordovan on anything other than boots?

Relatively new to styleforum, but I was wondering why would you pay a premium for cordovan on something such as penny loafers when a gorgeous french calfskin is available for cheaper. I'm sure the cordovan colors are quite beautiful, but I view cordovan as a wonderful material for boots and crappy weather that can be scruffed up a bit without worry. But a penny loafer doesn't exactly keep out water even if it is waterproof and you don't exactly want to scruff up a beautiful shiny dress shoe. Am i just being naive here? Someone explain it to me.
