Actually, that isn't true. If you tell BiG to hem to a specific length, they will do it with no questions asked, at least if you are ordering online. The first pair of jeans that I ever ordered from BiG, I made the same mistake as FourT6and2, and nobody from BiG contacted me to make sure that I knew what I was doing. They just hemmed them and shipped them out to me, and I had to keep that pair dry as a result. Maybe it's different if you order by phone, since they have you on the line and can tell you more easily. I do agree that they are great about the free multiple hemmings, and now that I am a repeat customer of theirs, they are much more communicative with me about product details when I order.
right, IF THEY KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING THEN THEY WOULD HAVE NEVER HEMMED THEM. but yes, if you just say ... hey, i would like them hemmed here, they are not going to say ... um, are you sure ... that would be unreasonable obviously. do you understand the difference?

im certain they would have. he must have said he wanted to not wash them. there is no way they would have hemmed them if they had known what he was trying to do.

The bolded sentence is the one that my comment was directed at. Whether he said that he wouldn't wash the jeans or didn't say anything at all, BiG still would have hemmed them anyway. You still have to know what you are doing, or at least you have to tell BiG that you don't, because they're not going to go out of their way to hold your hand on this just because you are a noob, unless you ask for help. For someone that is a first-time customer, it would actually be nice if they emailed back hemming requests and said, "This pair of jeans will shrink x amount of inches in the inseam and x amount of inches in the waist when washed and stretch back x amount of inches in the waist when worn. Be aware that hemmed jeans cannot be returned, so please confirm your inseam length after making sure that it is correct." Especially in light of the fact that most jeans models have no shrinkage information at all on the site. I'm sure that doing something like that would help bring back more repeat business, because a lot of first-timers with STF denim get it wrong, find that they've wasted their money, and don't bother trying again.

um ... wtf? yeah, i guess the BIG RED disclaimer saying ... these jeans will shrink x amount isnt sufficient. and no, its not bigs responsibility to go back and make sure every single customer has washed his or her jeans before they hem them. they simply do what the customer asks. but what im suggesting is they would have never hemmed then had they known what he was trying to do. by them not knowing certainly isnt there fault, its the customers. that is why they post measurements on the site. does that makes sense? if not, please go back and read what i wrote again, im not sure how much simpler i can explain myself.

I don't think it's irrational at all, it's just good customer service if the customer is a first-timer at the store. It's not like I'm suggesting them to do it on every order with every customer, just the first time with new customers asking for a hem. Not sure what you mean by the big red disclaimer. If there is one, it's only on the pages for a small percentage of models that they carry. For the majority of their models, there is no specific shrinkage information at all. With newer models, BiG does seem to be starting to put shrinkage specifics in more consistently, which is the right way to go IMO. But most of their standard models still have none.

    agree 100%
it's confusing enough for the experts, look at all the sizing talk on all these denim threads.
would have been the decent thing to give him a heads up on the hemming impact.

interested to hear your take on this, FourT6and2, assuming you haven't sworn off SF and raw denim forever!

hang on, its not bigs fault for hemming the jeans. they clearly post measurements on their site (assuming he did not buy from the store). so wait, you think its their job to ask ... hey, even though you took the time to send in the jeans and even though you wrote out a note saying you want these hemmed ... i just want to make sure your right? that is totally unreasonable! just because this guy didnt know what he was doing, or maybe he just wanted to wear raw denim and not wash it, doesnt mean its big fault because he changed his mind. their isnt a denim retailer out there that will argue with the customer once he or she takes the time to send in the jeans (with a note and instructions) [IMG]

Nobody's blaming BiG for any of this. It is ultimately the customer's responsibility to educate himself about what he is buying and to understand the fine print of where he is buying it from.

However, there's no denying that it is good customer service for a store to make an effort in ensuring that a customer does understand these things. Many stores have done this for me in the past, and on more than one occasion, it has saved me a headache or two. As a customer, I appreciate this kind of service.

honestly, i dont think big could make it any more clear then what they already do. from day one blue in green has provided me the best customer service i have ever had ... this was WAY before i became a regular customer.

This is where you and I will have to agree to disagree. I don't think there is enough shrinkage information on the site for enough of their jeans models, and although I am overall very happy with the customer service I have received from them over the years, I do think they could have done a little bit of a better job of educating me about what I was buying the first time I ordered from them. They did what they were supposed to do, but to me, great customer service is when someone goes the extra mile for you, and they didn't do that then.

less BiG crying, more PBJ talk

OK. So who's getting these new 24 oz. PBJ models coming in the next month or so? I've heard that there will be a regular indigo model, a deep indigo model, and a purple face model. Cuts will be based on XX-005 and XX-011, rumor has it that the XX-005 cuts will only be available in smaller sizes and the XX-011 cuts will only be available in larger sizes.

if he mailed them in with strict instructions then i agree with you, it's all on him.

from the sound of his posts though he might have been trying them on in the store. if that was the case, and BIG hemmed them without noting the shrinkage that would come with a wash, i think you could question that.
    that's all i'm saying.
FWIW i was in BIG at the weekend for the first time and found them extremely helpful.

but see thats the point ... i dont think they would ever do that or let that happen. i am POSITIVE they would have mentioned the fact they they will shrink in the situation you mentioned above.

you know what your right, they should totally hold your hand. im going to talk them about hiring a full-time "hand holder" to appease people you like you. as for me, they have always been 100%.
