The AUD has weakened against the dollar in recent weeks. Two months ago, when the dollar was trading 1.04, I bought a pair of boots for AUD$330 and got charged US$315.

Today the rate is about 1.43. AUD$330 = USD$230.

In other words, 30% off R.M. Williams boots.

What else can we buy from Australia?

The AUD fell some more since I wrote this about 10 hours ago. It's now at 1.51. Most of the RM Williams are under $200.

How low will it go?

The AUD has dropped against the yen, too.

Apparently, one of the reasons for the drop in value is a fear that demand for iron ore, coal and other industrial resources will drop as the global economy slows - and those products form much of Australia's exports.
However, the Australian economy is still strong - our banks and financial sector have taken much less of a battering than have the corresponding US and UK sectors, we have no govt debt and a large budget surplus, and inflation and unemployment are still quite low.
Hopefully, market participants will come to their senses and the AUD will rise in value again soon.

Meanwhile, yes, Akubra hats and RM Williams boots would seem to be the way to go.
Maybe those of you who admire Phat Guido's fashion sense could send messages to Ethandesu, to ask him to ship you some Herringbone suits whilst the AUD is low??

I've noticed that the dollar has strengthened against the GBP as well. Any idea if this trend is likely to continue?
