Yes well i think this may be a situation where two layers of protection are better than one

As laphroig said, the wax *is* the protective coating. Just reproof that coating as required and you'll be golden. There's some reasonable instructions here or you could contact Barbour directly about after-care. http://www.bestofdownunder.com/driza...arerepair.html I would highly recommend not grabbing something like Scotchguard and hosing down your bag unless you're sure it's compatible. You risk damaging the protective coating that's already there and pooching the bag.

I can imagine a Barbour waxed bag getting to look very beat up in a very short time.
I think it would look quite nice though.

OK. The bag came in a few days ago. I left it in the box and just tossed it in the corner. Now that I actually have the time to inspect the bag more closely, I'm not sure the material is waxed cotton at all. I'm not seeing any sort of protective wax layer. I expected there to be a slight sheen due to the coating, but the canvas is completely matte. I sprinkled the bag with water, and it just soaked into the material. I would expect the water to bead off if it were wax cotton. So, my question is, does this change anything? Should I still not apply any sort of coating? I really like the bag (not to mention the price!), so I'm going to keep it regardless. Thanks for the suggestions!

errrmmm... any documentation come with it? Is the entire bag waxed cotton or only the base?

Waxed cotton is more matte than sheen in my experience, and water should bead on it. Depending on how the bag is treated, there may be some surface absorption at which point the water will bead, but stuff I've waxed always beads unless it needs reproofing. Apparently Filson's bead when they're wet, but not having one, I can't say for sure.

Did the absorption happen at a fold or corner or on a flat surface?

You can try contacting barbour http://www.barbour.com

Wax for after care can be found in lots of places, eg. http://www.nikwax.com/en-gb/products...-1&fabricid=-1

Any place that sells Australian outerwear, camping gear, or equestrian supplies should have something like this.
