^^^In my New Wave days, I wore two neckites at once on multiple occasions. A bowtie and a necktie is, of course, the logical extention of such habits.

Will, I disagree. I work in a legal dept. of a massive conglomerate. It was news the first few times, now, no one gives a ****. Hell, they think it is odd that I wear a suit at all (they take business casual to mean khakis and a polo). I flip between ties and bowties depending on the mood.

Bowties are a sign of eccentricity or perceived originality..It does work only on certain people ,i'm afraid...

Doctors and scholars tend to love them....

A lot of bowties wearers are looking like some kind of uber British caricature of a bygone era ,confined to ridicule in at least 95%of cases but if one can pull it ,that's a sign of orginilaty and personality....

On the right person ,at the right place and moment ,yes but not for me....
The last time i was wearing a bowtie ,i was 8 years old at my sister's wedding and it was a cheap velvet one....I never completely recovered from that supreme humiliation...

I'm with you there. Would I wear one on the first day at a new job, or to a board meeting? Probably not. Whilst that may be your acid test for appropriateness - times being what they are - what exactly defines appropriate these days? Would you wear khakis to a board meeting?

It seems that any effort above a lowest common denominator is suddenly suspect. Why are we buying in to that mentality?

Pursuant to the poll: I'm one of the small - and I do believe growing - minority that voted: 'neither'.

I have found that a well fitting dark suit and shirt with taller collar stand me in good stead - meaning 'correct' - in MOST situations.

Bow ties are almost non-existent in my city. Three sightings in I would say the last twenty years. The last time was on a very tall, well built and proportioned 40-ish Asian male who was also clothed and accessorized to a 't' and whose carriage confirmed that he knew all this.

Grooming included not unsurprisingly a 'Hamish Bowles' haircut and the large round black glasses beloved of private school boy alumni Asians who seem to fancy them exclusively.

So, I do believe bow ties fall into the fashion 'statement' category. In my social circle, beatings would result from the wearing. :>)

It's probably the same in most cities. Where I live, there was until very recently a member of a successful clothing retail family who always wore bowties. In my experience, he's the only bowtie wearer I've seen here. It was also sort of a joke among the populace.

The Bowtie is always linked to a certain sense of ridicule ,of posture for some or need to be different for others..

From the local GP to the surgeon ,the bowtie is so unfashionable that it is becoming slowly to rediscover a space for itself..

I do hate bowtie in any form of shape but on certain people ,they look superb...

The bottom line is that Chicks dig a man in a bowtie. The bad news is that most of those Chicks are over 70!

that;s another myth. I am 36 and I have women of all ranges (20-50) who love the look. it really depends on you being comfortable in the bowtie. if you look uncomfortable or unsure of yourself, it will telegraph a negative message. I think a better way is to practice on weekends wearing one and then during the week once you get used to it. It was hard for me at first as well. now people expect me to wear it. in fact, I see more and more men wearing them and some have said they started wearing them b/c they saw me.

go ahead. live dangerously.
