Provided a suit has a functioning boutonniere buttonhole, is there a way to attach a boutonniere without a pin?

Through the loop behind the lapel? If your suit doesn't have one, a mini-carnation with the bud pulled all the way through the buttonhole will stay in place.

1. Stem goes through lapel buttonhole.

2. Stem is held down on the back of the lapel by a keeper.

If you don't have one, a good tailor should be able to put one in for you.
