I recently bought a pair of Alden wingtip bal's in shell.

My right foot is wider than my left and is very snug inside the shoe. The is no space between the ball of my foot and the shoe when it is on my foot.

Is this how they are supposed to fit or am I asking for trouble down the road?

How tight are you lacing them up?

I haven't worn them outside. If they don't fit they way they should, I'll exchange them for a different size.

All I've done is stand on my carpet.

Fairly tight. I did loosen the laces a little, and it helped, but not significantly.

Don't be afraid to walk in them on the carpet. Any subsuquent marks can be buffed out with a little wax polish on the sole.

I'm less worried about the sole than I am about putting a crease along the tox box of the shoe. My dealer would be reluctant to take them back if that were the case.

I just assume if they feel tight standing there, they will probably feel the same way walking.

My shoes tend to stretch a little after wearing, so this might not be a problem as you break them in (this is the case with my bespoke and RTW shoes).

Is the ball of your foot (i.e. the widest part) at the widest part of the shoe?

Why don't you buy a half size up and tell your dealer you want to be able to compare both at home and you'll return one of them. It's tough if you don't walk around a bit to get a feel. They have to be comfortable when on. Shoes stretch over time, but not that much. As I've said before, it's a fine line between snug and acceptable and actually too tight and not working out. Something to figure out with experience, I suppose. Good luck!

Not really. The widest part of my foot is a little lower than the widest part of the shoe. There is one inch of space at the top of the shoe.

Should I go down a half size and up one size in width? From a 9.5C to a 9D?

You need to fit your shoe to the larger foot.
