    hey

this post probably should go to the other forum, but i only post here, and i'm clueless over there.

so my date is wearing a black dress with silver rhine stones on it.

i'm not getting a tux, so i'm sticking with a suit, but all black w/ silver tie seems pretty boring to me.

what are my options? =] i was thinking of getting a silver vest ... so maybe silver vest, white shirt, black tie ?

any help would be great. thanks!

i would wear something relatively simple. My prom was really informal, so I'm not sure if any of this next bit is viable at all for you. Also, I'm not sure how well the suit you have would work as a three-piece suit, or if you have a suit already (i wore a 3-piece boss suit to my prom, with a pink (before everyone started wearing it) dress shirt and a white tie..girlfriend was wearing a pink/white dress)... personally, i would wear a three piece suit, a white dress shirt with subtle silver pinstripes, and a black silk tie. If you can get an interesting vest that is an added bonus. Nice shoes will do wonders. Personally, i wouldn't get a french cuff dress shirt, but wearing cufflinks is a nice touch. However, the good thing about a vest is that for an after party you can just take off your suit jacket, and roll up your dress shirt sleeves and you'll still be well-dressed, and that doesn't work too well with french cuffs.

To be honest, fit is the most important thing. Get your suit altered and you will probably automatically be the best dressed guy.

Prom is by definition formal. It's the occasion that lets young women everywhere pick out and wear evening gowns for the first time in their lives.

Look nice, but don't draw too much attention to yourself. Your date's outfit is more important than yours is. Just get something that fits you well and compliments your date's dress a little bit. A Black 3 piece suit, white shirt, real black bow tie, and crystal shirt studs will be perfect.

If you want to show off get yourself a black ascot and wear it with an open spread-collar shirt.

that sounds great. what would an "interesting" vest be? and where would i go about shopping for one.

mmm i completely agree i just didn't want to look completely boring, and i needed some ideas. black bow tie with a regular suit looks sort of weird doesn't it? then again i don't know the difference between a tuxedo suit jacket and a regular suit jacket.

also what are crystal shirt studs? and what's a black ascot?

An ascot is a sort of folded men's scarf. You can wear it around your bare neck under the open shirt collar. It's like a tie for when you don't want to button your shirt. http://suityourself.com/tie_a_ascot.asp Shirt studs are used in place of buttons. Google them. A tuxedo jacket has satin lapels as opposed to regular jackets, which just have the body fabric.
