before i get flamed all to hell: i DID run a search, quite a few in fact. most of the threads were several years old or not very helpful, and they aren't similar enough to what i want this thread to be.

post specific examples of barebones items that you would recommend as a "first buy" for anyone looking to start a professional wardrobe.

no examples coming from me because i'm the one who needs the advice here lol.

to expand on:

Brown shoes/Black shoes

Brown shoes can be more casual, the staple black shoes should be Cap Toe Oxfords.

Agree on all but the pocket square. It's a bit presumptuous for some brand new junior person to come in to start work with a pocket square. Right or wrong it may ruffle the feathers of senior people and is not something you should introduce until you've established yourself.

To add to that you can get away with only having black shoes but I'd make sure to have at least two pairs so you can rotate. Maybe a cap-toe and a wingtip.

Good point. If there is only the need/money for one suit I'd go with charcoal.

It depends if you need business professional 5 days a week (or 7) or not at all!
If it is business casual, its sad to say anything goes
