Problem with Chruch Shoes

Hi all,

First post so hope I have the correct section.

I purchased a pair of church's on Friday and as with all of my leather soled shoes I had a "topper" put on the shoes soles immediately (I get through lesther soles very quickly otherwise). That's the thin rubber sole that sticks to the bottom.

I wore them today and as I took them off to put the shoe tree in them I noticed the small stitch that is at the bottom of the laces, by the throat of the shoe (these were oxfords) had pulled through the leather on one side and had split the leather!

I do have wide feet but I've never experienced this from any shoes.

Now, the question is, will church return these shoes and let me exchange for a new pair or will they kick up a fuss about the topper being fitted? Anyone with similar experiences would be helpful.
