Gift giving is something I've always wished I was better at. I'm not cheap, just unimaginative.

Have you ever given a gift to your girlfriend/wife that they didn't ask for and REALLY liked?

I bought my friend the new Ghostface album when it came out in December, since her birthday was that week. She adored it, even if it was one of his weaker albums.

I don't give many gifts in general, but I've always fancied myself adept at the task when I do take it on.

Ummm, yeah. These things are usually highly personalized (that is, to their taste, I don't mean engraved), and the reason they are liked is because you correctly surmised they would from their taste/appreciations/predilections. ~ H

Hard to go wrong with flowers. If you are a bit more serious jewelry and lingerie are always good choices.

Yes, yes I have.

Suggestion: know your woman. Other than that, "suggestions" are pretty much meaningless because it's all about taste. It gets harder and harder the longer you've been together, I'm starting to struggle 8 years in.

I got some general good advice about gift giving. Do not give someone something they are passionate about unless you are willing to invest a similar amount of time and interest in researching or looking into whatever you get (I guess except for music - if you know they like a particular artist or album and don't have it yet, that easy enough). That's why most people FAIL when they give me clothes. Not that i'm not grateful for the gesture, but it's not something I would use frequently. If the chick loves women's shoes or purses, don't even try.

What you should buy are things that reflect that you are thoughtful - things she has mentioned in passing that she might like. I had a friend (who I wasn't dating) mentioned how much she liked strawberry pies. Next time I visited, I bought her a strawberry pie, and she loved it. Only cost me $6, and I got to eat some of it. The strawberry pie, not her pie.

My lady is a unique girl. She isn't into anything remotely material. She really prefers experiences. While saving me a lot of money, I find that I would much rather just buy her a fancy damn handbag than make a romantic dinner. I did take her to Paris for her birthday though. That was expensive...

+1. The good news for me is, my wife has always enjoyed talking about things she likes and wants, so I know that aspect of her well. The bad news is, our anniversary, her birthday, and Xmas come in rapid succession. Ah, well.

Anyway, the most important thing is to pay attention. If you've been with a woman more than a couple of months, choosing a personal gift shouldn't be terribly difficult.

I know. One of her favorite musicians releases an album that she's been eagerly awaiting and I go do something idiotic like buy it for her. Should have stuck to gold necklaces and patio furniture. You know, **** women really like.
