Preppy Wedding Question

Hello,
First post here. I'll be attending a preppy wedding in Vermont this weekend and I had a question about my attire. I was planning blue blazer, grey pants, and brown wingtips. Can I wear a bowtie with cufflinks with this? I understand its proper to wear bowties with cufflinks in very formal situations such as black tie events but what about my described outfit? Thanks

Many folks here when asked about bow ties would say something along the lines of "if you have to ask, you can't pull it off"... but everybody starts somewhere. As long as it's self-tie and you forget about it once you're wearing it, I'd say you're golden.

A "preppy" wedding? Is that your description or theirs? If they are calling it that, don't go. Even if you live in Vermont and have nothing else to do but it's so damn convenient, stay home. If you do go, wear what you want. Just make sure your bow tie is smaller than the Bride's bodice, otherwise she will be upset and you won't be invited to celebrate the birth of their first child in a few months.

lol. they're calling it that. They are recent transplants from NYC. From what i know it will be "preppy" and just wanted to know about the outfit. Thanks

When worn outside of the tuxedo bow ties take on a decidedly non-formal appearance. Combining them with cuff links will make you look like a bipolar schizo.

Does the blazer have metal buttons? If so, there is a good chance of bling overload.

Otherwise, link up the cuffs with something casual, like silk knots.

I think the silk knots suggested above would be the only way to pull it off. My problem is two-fold. 1) the bow tie does, as stated by a previous poster, take on a less formal air. 2) French cuffs without a suit -- that is, a jacket and trousers, is just, I don't know, sort of a mismatch. French cuffs are often pretty formal.

Go with a barrel cuff shirt and you're set.

I would wear the bowtie, something casual like a tattersal pattern, wear it with barrel cuffs. I hate silk knots myself, but everyone else seems to love those things.

I was suspicious when they labeled themselves preppy... grown, marrying men don't do that. Where in New York are they from? If it's the city, I would question their preppy credentials further.

You can seriously wear whatever the f*ck you want to a Vermont wedding, I don't care whose it is.

I'm a Vermonter and when we have a wedding or a funeral there are people in suits and in camouflage and hunting boots in equal proportion.

Completely agree. Go barrel cuffs with a bow tie.
