I'm thinking of buying pre-tied bow ties in the style I like for my groomsmen. Will a bow tie that is pre-tied be obvious to the average person? Can you really tell the difference?

Your average person could probably tell there's a difference but probably won't care and might even really be able to put their finger on why. It depends on a few things.

On a lot of pre-tied bows the knot is very small and tight, which is very hard to achieve on a self-ties especially a non-adjustable one. People who do tie their own will likely notice this, wonder just how you did it and guess that it's likely pre-tied.

Next bit is the clasp. People will only see this if you're going with wing collars anyway, and even so as long as it's not too obvious people may think it's just the adjuster.

The other part is that all their bow ties will look exactly the same (assuming they all get the same ones). In fact, this is probably the most obvious sign that they're pre-tied.

I imagine a lot of people would just suggest going self-tied (and me included). What exactly is putting you off? Apart from the obvious hassle of tying the things.

How many more threads can you possibly start about the same topic i.e. wedding, tux, bow tie, braces, etc?

Self tie is far smarter and I would suggest its worth making the effort.... takes a few practice runs so dress early!
