Possible to modify a pair of shoes that are too big?

I have a pair of Ferragamos I've worn a couple of times that are just too big for me. It hurts my feet to wear them. Has anyone ever had a similar problem and solved it by bringing the shoes to a a cobbler to modify? I'm not really sure how or if this is possible but wanted to get some opinions before I waste time finding a good cobbler.

My guess is the shoes are about 1/2 size too big...maybe 1 size, but if they were 1/2 size smaller I don't think it would be a big problem.

I fear my situation is a lost cause...but hope it's not.

Unfortunately a lost cause. No real way to shorten the shoes and keep the integrity of the shoe design, especially on a shoe like Ferragamo that does not have higher quality sole construction. I'd save up for some new shoes or try any combination of tongue pads, inserts, and heel pads if new shoes aren't in your immediate future. Good luck.

More than half of my shoe collection is now at least a half size too big. But I'm too cheap to part with them. Every single one of them have always had insoles ( made of wetsuit material) in them. And now, with a tongue pad installed, and an additional pair of thin ankle socks that barely cover the heel, worn under my normal pair, actually make for a very comfortable fit.

Mind you, this is on some of my plainer and more casual and chunky shoes like my double soled Alden shell wingtips and my pebble grained bluchers. As long as the heel sock doesn't show. I don't mind wearing the additional pair or the extra second or two it takes to put them on.
