What are all of the capabilities of a top notch shoe repair? What's the best and worst experiences you have had at one?

By the way, I have a Vass Shell Cordovan shoe that has some white marks at the creasings, giving the shoe a green color in sunlight. A shoe repair shop can easily make these look entirely black and brand new again in color? How much can a shoe repair shop remedy creases?

A hearty brushing with a horsehair brush may take care of the marks at the creasings. I've found shell cordovan to be incredibly resilient and about as low maintenance as it gets. Looking forward to hearing responses to your first question.

I'm not sure if that is possible, I've never attempted it. In my humble opinion, one of the greatest benefits of wearing shell cordovan is that it takes on an amazing patina over time. The eclectic mix of rich burgundy and chocolate that rises to replace the fading black is deeply satisfying to observe.

I ground the side of the heel against a curb while wearing a pair of RM Williams Craftsmen last weekend. The leather is lightly scratched and roughed up beyond what can be fixed from conditioning and polishing them.

Is this something a cobbler could repair? Or should I just consider them to have a little more character now and ignore it?

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
