I have both, I and was wondering if anyone else thinks they are related. It sucks because my presentation is ruined by poor posture, does anyone now of any exercises that would help.

p.s I have a mullet, is that unacceptable by SF's standards?

Yeah, stop slouching! When you notice yourself slouching, just pull your shoulders back. As far as self esteem goes, you should probably consult a therapist about that.

Poor posture is a result of a continous forward slouching we do most of the day. Driving, eating, writing, working in front of the computer, etc. My posture and self-confidence improved dramatically after practising Bikram yoga. It really helped re-align my spine and improved my back. Here's a link and I find their 'testimonials' very inspiring.

There are a number of somatic disciplines that should improve posture. The Alexander Technique is perhaps the only one that has that as a primary goal. I can report, after having taken a term's worth of classes, that Feldenkrais does not target posture.

the one most effective for me is to sit on a yoga ball and do shoulder presses with two dumbells. it takes a lot of concentration and good posture to do them correctly. i find that when i'm sitting at my desk i sit up straight (as if i'm on the ball).

Don't know about causality but there's definitely a correlation.

Expanding your shoulders and holding your chin high and erect really gives you an air of authority.

Hmmmmm -

Just floating another point of view:

I slouch out of a 'Why the Hell shouldn't I?' attitude.
Probably a minority POV.

I think you can have reasonably good self-esteem and still be too lazy to stand up straight. Maybe you can arrogantly slouch?

Nobody addresed the 'Mullet' question I noticed -

If nobody else wears the Mullet then those who do may find themselves with 'outsider' status which can often lead to being cool...

I think Mullet wearers just need to wait for the wheel of fashion to turn once more then they could be laughing.

If you rather hit the gym than doing yoga, classic deadlifts would be your best bet for a better posture overall. However, I would recommend a full-body workout 2-3 times a week for even better results.

still trying to decide whether the original post is a troll or not but posture is something i've been trying to work on since my recent experience with a herniated disc.

my physical therapist says it's just a matter of constantly noticing when you slouch and fixing it. one exercise he recommended is to face a corner with your arms up against the walls forming the corner. then slowly press your body into the corner. it's supposed to work out the shoulder muscles that help keep the body in an upright position.

as far as the relationship between posture and self esteem, i don't think there is any.

mullets are acceptable so long as they truely represent your personal style.

Bikram Yoga would definitely be good, but sometimes the workouts are incredibly hard, so it might be an idea to start with Hatha or Ashtanga, do that for 3-6 months and then move to Bikram.
