Poor man's watch thread

I had not participated in this thread for a while. I was surprised to see a recent trend of orange watches in the last few days.

And it just so happens that the watch I’m wearing today has a bit of orange. This vintage Caravelle is from 1971, and I’m trying to decide what kind of strap or bracelet would look best. For today though, orange works!

Agree with you on that Jazz.
Numbers on a sports watch are largely redundant anyway, but when they put a giant 12 (or in this case 12 and 6) only - it becomes a deal breaker for me. Do we really need that much guidance on which way is up on the watch dial and where the 12 should be? Tag does this on a lot of their formula 1 watches which would look decent otherwise.

I think I am done with mechanical Seikos for now. I have 3 Seiko on the 6R35 movement. Two Baby Alpinists and one SPB143J1. Only one watch is running somewhat accurately. Never had anything like this with any of my Swiss watches.

Seiko bashing shall not be tolerated here ?

My 4R35 Mini Turtle slowed down again, about a year after having it regulated. Over a minute slow a day now, hasn't been dropped, hasn't been magnitized. Kinda getting fed up myself.

Seiko's entry-level movements just aren't very good I think. I only paid $400 for the Cocktail Time so you really do get what you pay for! Still need to test it and see what time it keeps exactly.

It was way off from the factory, but I expected the need to have it regulated when I ordered it anyway and it only cost 10 bucks. But I am not going to be constantly babying this watch and taking it in for service every year, as much as I love the design. Thinking about selling it, and my Solar Tuna below (as I feel it's a little too big for me), and just buy a damn Promaster already.

Is the 6R35 also considered an entry-level movement or is it a tier up? Because it certainly doesn't perform like a movement that's above entry-level.

The accuracy of the movement in both mh SPB165J1 and SPB143J1 is genuinely a joke. But, it doesn't bother me that much at the end of the day.

Also, for anyone in the Toronto area, what's a good shop to take these to for getting them regulated for a reasonable price? I was quoted $40-50 by a store by Yorkdale.

Speaking of Seiko.

I usually change my watch watch every day so I'm not sure I'd notice if my plethora of NH35/4R35 movements were out of spec. I don't think I've noticed any and I've seen tons of them on a time grapher and most are within + or - 10 seconds a day.

With all the Seiko bashing I would like to make my first post in this thread about my new daily driver a King Samurai. I struggle to find watches that look good on my wrist and this one fits the bill. I have worn it for a few days and the accuracy is about 5 sec fast per day. On the other hand I have an older Seiko 5 with a 4R36 that loses about 90 seconds per day. My only complaint is the bracelet but I have a replacement on the way.

Absolutely.

Here is an example. I've corrected the time on my SPB143J1 about a week ago (maybe less) and here is what is going on. The watch is losing about a minute per day, which is absolutely horrendous for a modern watch and for the price. I paid $1,800 CAD (including tax) (they did not have any sale on this model) which is not cheap.

The watch is great. The movement sucks.
