Kinda related- lately, I've been thinking about getting a Panerai. But I want one that's got all the prototypical features; so a Luminor with the big crown guard, a sandwich dial, just two hands, minimal writing, and a Unitas hand wound movement. The simplest possible Panerai, so basically this

How ashamed should I feel about this?

No reason to feel ashamed. Panerai has a very distinctive, iconic design, and yes, the most basic styles are the most attractive as well.

One of the most gorgeous dress watches currently available, the Portugieser Automatic 40. (those numerals are pure perfection)

Especially attractive in this salmon dial version, as I see.

I've always liked how these look in pictures, but in real life they are crazy thick for a watch that looks like it wants to be a dress watch.

As others have said, there's nothing to be ashamed about.

I used to think they were hideous and weird and oddly shaped and then I handled a bunch in the flesh and tried some on and was sold!

If I could ever make up my mind as to which I'd be happiest with, I'd probably have bought one a couple years ago by now. Currently, leaning towards the white "Radiomir 1940" but every time I get close to pulling the trigger, I change my mind.

Well, for what it is, the price tag is quite steep... and I think that no one ever should wear a dress watch that is as wide as 40mm in diameter.

That is really nice. Too bad it's too big for its style.

I generally agree that for a dress watch a diameter of 37/38 mm would look more appropriate, but it's always a matter of balance, and for me that watch is just perfectly proportioned. Paradoxically, even its thickness contributes to the overall balance, whereas a too thin case would look too large.
As for the price point, it's not cheap, but not overpriced in relation to its features and brand prestige.

By the way, the Portugieser in not the typical dress watch, the other versions are definitely sportier, but the Automatic 40 is just as versatile to be a great dress watch and also a more casual one.
