The construction quality between all these brands is about the same. I get all my polos altered, so cut is not an issue. Plus, all three lines offer tons of colors and patterns so for me the issue boils down to which logo I prefer to sport.

Vintage Lacoste may have been edge three years ago but with the popularity of the Lacoste revival, I believe it has become far too common.

I prefer vintage Penguin (aka Munsingwear). Even Original Penguin (the recently revived brand) is far less popular than Lacoste. In fact, I can't say that I've seen more than five people sporting the Penguin logo this year. Plus vintage is more legit than the revival stuff.

Le Tigre is just a joke. A lame JC Penney brand. I wonder if anyone is going to revive this brand too?

The RL horsey has always been a mainstay. It's never all that cool, but will never go out of style. A few years ago it would've been quite embarassing to be caught with a Lacoste (and to a lesser degree Penguin) polo but the RL horsey is far more immune from fashion trends.

Yes, logo obsession is all incredibly superficial.

Gotta love the logos.

When talking about vintage logos my girlfriend brought up a brand with an umbrella logo. I had no idea what the hell she was talking about so we looked it up and found it - Arnold Palmer ROFL I think I actually like Le Tigre the best, logo-wise

But shirt-wise Lacoste is the best in my book. I'll leave RL to the real preps, but Penguin is alright. Might pick up one of those funny looking madras (plaid?) jackets sometime soon heh m

it's ironic how Le Tigre seems to be pushed as a higher end brand now. i've seen LT track jackets selling for over $100. i remember that brand in the 80s as being for po' ass fools who couldnt afford Izod Lacoste

i've always hated the polo logo and never owned one.

i have a few Penguin knits i like a lot. but I've been wearing Fred Perry since the 80s and it still remains a staple and the only polo i buy with any regularity

Paul Fredrick has some great polos. Mercerized cotton in some fine colors. I guess one could find some good deals at hugestore.com too. speaking of which, after perusing a thread on undershirts at AA I decided to buy a two-pack from hugestore. Seemed to be good quality at a reasonable price. We'll see.

Not sure if you'll care, Get Smart, but they're hawking Fred Perrys at Urban Outfitters now. No Harringtons, just polos and track jackets and some odd accessories. Hipsters roll their eyes at logos, and I understand. As far as "standing for something" none of these logos stands for anything good. I know you acknowledged superficiality, Kent, but a solution to overdone logos would be not wearing one... That said, RL polos are undeniably good quality, and are always around for $30. Lacostes are OK, their value is questionable at $70. I have a couple vintage le tigres that fit great, just the right poly/cotton blend, but I've tried other vintage as well as new and they haven't stood up. I've never found a vintage penguin that fit and wasn't beyond help. Never tried a new one, but I file the look with bowling shirts - if you can pull it off, more power to ya. Not for me.

one of my friends got a polo from his chick that has EVERY logo plastered on one shirt. this way your "hipness" will always be covered, no matter who's in vogue

Lacoste is my pick. Vintage or not, they look pretty good for me.

If I had $300 to waste, I might go for a Dior Homme polo but uhh.. no thanks.

One vote for Polo RL. Yes, they're everywhere but I like the custom fit and colour range. Having said that, I've never owned other brand polos and only ever tried them on in store ie lacoste and fred perry.

I picked up a couple arnold palmer polos when I was in Hong Kong. Their not associated with senior's centres there and just a regular brand. It's always interesting how brands market themselves completely differentl in different continents.

I wear polos at work, which are either professional (i.e. have my logo) or are Fred Perry.

I like Fred Perry the best, though they are difficult to find - I like Lacoste second - Polo's are nice but the fit is bad for me.

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
