I recall this polo coat (retailing at $1,995.00) going on sale at the Rhinelander after Christmas during years past. I wonder if any forum members recall the sale price? A friend has suggested that it will likely be around $800.

I've heard rumors that it has been made by Luciano Barbera. Can anyone confirm?

Thanks.

I was at the mansion recently and saw the camel polo coat on sale at 40% off, IIRC. If the retail was $1995, I don't think that would get it down to $800, but maybe they'll drop it down to 60%. I recently purchased the polo coat in brown herringbone from ebay, NWT $225. You might want to try there first.

I bought one NWT on eBay a couple of months ago for about $300. There were about a half-dozen available from different sellers within a few week period, so I presume that they showed up in a variety of Polo outlet stores at the same time. Given the price at which I purchased it, it's hard to imagine paying $800 or $1200 for it, but it's a beautiful coat, with all of the classic polo coat details, and the camel hair fabric is among the nicest I've seen. (Ebay can really spoil you for retail shopping -- even when the retail stores have good sales.) The RL Polo coat was much nicer than the comparable one I saw at Brooks Brothers a couple of years ago (which, admittedly, listed for less than half of the RL).

I'm no expert in labels, but the one inside my polo coat looks like the same Corneliani label that's in other Blue Label suits and sport coats that I have.

What's the fit and sizing of the RL polo coat like?
Would you size down for a modern eusopean fit? Or do they run very slim?

I'm an italian 52 and usually size down to 50 when I buy top coats.
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Why? A good coat lasts almost forever with reasonable care. You'll wear it most of the winter. On a cost/wear ratio it's one of the cheapest things you'll buy.

They run slightly slim-ish, for an overcoat.

Ask for measurements if you are purchasing online, but I think the armpit-armpit on those in a size EU50R would run 22-22.5", which is snug if a jacket is worn underneath.

Doubtful that it is made by LB.

Wow - interesting to see myself posting back in 2006. I still have the DB mentioned above, I described it back then as a herringbone but its basically a tweed. Its made it Italy and has all the same tags as the corneliani-made suits. It has enormous, beautiful horn buttons.

Regarding size, I'm not sure if the cut has changed over the years, or even if the cut on the camel coat is slimmer, but the polo coat that I have is cut very roomy, in keeping with the original style when it was worn by tennis/polo players, I guess. If you want it to fit on the slimmer side, you should definitely size down at least one size. Maybe even two, but I'd err on the side of one size down unless you get a chance to try some on.

Thank you all for your very helpful replies!

From reading about the polo coat I think cut might have changed somewhat. At first I didn't realise the polo coat is such classic and have been sold for several years. Some recommends sizing up and others to size down. The more recent coats seems to run tight in shoulders and chest but otherwise quite roomy. Based on the measurements found here and on eBay I would probably have bought my actual size if buying a recent edition.

Since I found the polo coat a bit too long and roomy I decided to buy another coat similar to the polocoat. Its a Ralph Lauren Blue Label all cashmere coat also made in Italy. It's shorter and maybe slightly less formal which suits my needs better. Anyone know anything about this coat? Retail price etc?

That coat is baller status. I think I am going to put this on my wish list for my 40th birthday. Even though I love this style of coat when I tried it on at the RL store in Chicago a few years back it seemed too forced for a young person. I'll give myself a few years to mature and then hopefully I can pull it off. Either way though, beautiful coat. :slayer:

I have a camel hair polo coat as well, but mine is definitely cut tighter than a normal coat. I will try and post pictures of the tags etc later...

Thanks! I think young people over here dress a little more formal than they do in the US, so it's easier getting away with it here.
But hey, if you like it I think you should get it!
