Yes stupid and annoying, great it's part of the culture, but it still sucks.

I flipped by one game and I thought there was an audio problem. A couple of days later I flipped by another game and heard the same sound, so I thought this must be the year of the locust in South Africa (not kidding). It then dawned on me that I'd seen something on the news on these things. Yes, I say ban them (despite the fact that I don't watch the events).

I think ESPN has been filtering out the sound lately. It's still pretty bad though, I say they ban them once group stage is over.

They need to ban this garbage. Soccer is so much better when you can here the fans actually singing and chanting in the stands. Hopefully after South Africa gets eliminated these will go by the wayside.

I imagine if I was in the stands, I would hate it, but i'm not. On TV I think it's okay.

Robin Van Persie stated he didn't hear the referee when going through while being on offside.
If this annoyance results into receiving cards, it should be banned because it is hindering the game.

+1 Ban it if it interrupts the flow of the game because players can't hear the referee or it massively distracts them, but not just because a couple of people find it annoying. Football games are loud and sometimes a bit unruly: this isn't tennis.

Broke out the app at work the other day for a lark in a meeting. Would be curious to hear the sound of a stadium full of smartphones.

Nope. It's part of the culture. What if they banned singing while ahead? Same thing.

That being said they are damn annoying.
