As an ex-Chicagoan who doesn’t get nearly enough opportunity to wear my Burberry trench and Drake’s cashmere scarves in Pasadena, I sort of wish I had the opportunity to put them to use in the Midwest this week, but then I sort of don’t.

But we who are in California, where people are vexed by mid 40’s overnight lows, salute you in the Midwest! A good week for outerwear.

You don't want -43 with windchill. Trust me. You can be 70 degrees north of that and still rock a scarf. It has, indeed, been a good week for outerwear.

A friend sent me this the last time we had a crazy polar vortex. He did a good job trolling.

Dressing with élan whatever the weather:

From Style Forum 12/18

No thinsulate for me!, declared My friend Alex when he arrived
at my office on a particularly frigid day during the mini Ice Age
that had descended upon Chicago in the 80s. He was dressed in a
bold patterned Balmacaan, which must have weighed 20 pounds,
topped off with a fur ushanka, a reference to his Russian heritage,
no doubt. Against stereotype, Alex was a highly successful database
consultant and published technical author who admitted to owning
400 ties and shopped at the legendary Dunhill Tailors in New York.
I have not been in touch with him for years, but understand that he
has changed careers and is now an antique appraiser, a profession
more in keeping with his sartorial inclinations. For those among you
who eschew such contemporary cold weather solutions as the
Storm System, I offer this sublime example from Savile Row:

What a concept !, a Buffalo Plaid Ushanka.
Combines two frigid cultures: the Canadian and the Russian.
By the way, my maternal grandfather's trade in the Ukraine
over a century ago was to make fur hats: Shapkas and Ushankas.
After deserting from the army he emigrated to the US where he made
cloth caps and ultimately a small fortune. An offshoot of the firm,
which made and later imported baseball caps, etc only closed down
a few years ago with the retirement of my second cousin.

The picture accurately expresses the flinty resolve with which Southern Californians approach rebuilding. Many Chicagoans live in apartments, don't have lawns, and don't fully understand the emotional anguish that rearranging lawn furniture can entail. On the bright side, Chicago has few weeks long, major metro adjacent, forest fires that turn cities into apocalyptic hellscapes and stygian darkness.
