Pocket squares without a tie?

What is the consensus on pocket linens without a tie?

Ties aren't very common on the trading floor, but jackets are somewhat more common. I like the touch that pocket squares add, but would they look out of place if worn without a tie?

What about my french cuffed shirts without a tie, and sometimes without a jacket?

Speaking for myself, I really don't like this look. I know it's getting trendy now, but french cuffs connote formality. I don't feel comfortable wearing french cuffs with a sportscoat, let alone without a jacket or without a tie.

I think french cuffs without a tie are okay, given current practices, but they do need a sportscoat or suit. Maybe the silk knot ones would be okay without a jacket of any kind. Others seem to flashy.

I think a pocket square without a tie is acceptable, even preferable.

Pocket Square without a tie is a-ok. As is french cuff without a tie. As is french cuff without a jacket. How flashy the links/knots are when worn without a jacket is a matter of taste and situation.

Yeah, taste and situation are always the question. I have friends who wear cuffs on a shirt without a tie or jacket. These are generally flashy people, which is fine. In any case, this look attracts more attention to the cuffs. The cuffs and one's wrist/hand area almost become the outfit's main focus. That's fine, but maybe you should also consider a manicure then.

Wear a pocket square whenever there is an appropriate pocket for one. I want a top coat with a breast pocket so I can put a pocket square in one of them too.

As for french cuffs... can wear them without a jacket so long as you have a tie I think. Otherwise it just kinda looks like you forgot the tie. I wouldn't do FC without a tie, even with a jacket.

Surely a pocket square is several degrees more formal than a tie? The wearing of an open-necked shirt wth a sports jacket, blazer or suit is incongruous - mixed modes sending a mixed message - and a pocket square would simply add to the confusion in my opinion.
Please keep open-necked shirts and jackets apart from each other. There waqs an epidemic of this combination in the 1950s, another in the 1970s, and now there is another - and it looks no better now than it did then - sloppy and unfinished. I have exprressed myself on this perhaps rather too vehemently in other posts, and may have come up against a UK/USA cultural difference. To me tie without jacket is infinitely preferable to jacket without tie.

I'm in agreement here regarding the wearing of french cuffs without a jacket. Doesn't look right to me, and I'm not particularly hardcore about following the "rules" either.
