I don't think that there is as much difference as you think - the military is simply the group that practices violence on a regular basis, as apposed to studying the theory of it.

Arguing? Nah, interesting conversation is how I look at it. It's good to see a common thing in different perspectives. It broadens the knowledge base on the subject which is always a good thing.

Yep, I hope I can avoid that day for my entire life. That should be the proper mindset for anyone who is really serious about self defense.
