I voted that socks are both optional and mandatory. It depends on other factors, including geography, climate, and sweaty feet.

I have several pairs/makes but my favourites are a pair of old (almost indestructable) Florsheim beaters in burgundy. I wear them with any casual pants and sockettes. Sorry I won't do sockless. Quite similar to this 'Berkley' model but mine are older with a rounder toe.
