I like the Mammas and Pappas, the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and my favorite the Beach Boys (the kings!!).

Can you share some other California music with me?

I prefer sweet melodies and good lyrics with that California sounds.

Though the categorization may be geographically apt, anything that contains The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and The Beach Boys is going to be a very broad genre...

Jan & Dean, Save for a Rainy Day, essential.
Roger Nichols Small Circle of Friends fits the bill.
Free Design (though Canadian) matches the aesthetic and era.
LOVE.

I´m really fond of the bittersweet, ironic, biting rock of the late Warren Zevon. More songwriter than singer.

Linda Ronstadt and Jackson Brown are also good.

I'll second the Warren Zevon nomination. Linda Ronstadt and Jackson Brown, not so much. Both are talented and Ronstadt in particular has a beautiful voice, both neither really does a whole lot for me in the long run (pun intended). Ronstadt's cover of "Poor Pitiful Me" is pretty good - as long as it's been a while since you've heard Zevon's superior rendition.

May I suggest Van Dyke Parks "Song Cycle"?

1. Beach Boys connection
2. California-centric lyrics: see "Laurel Canyon"
3. Sweet melodies
4. California
5. Beach Boys
6. Sweetness
7. Melodies

Van Halen, Green Day, Social Distortion, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Counting Crows

Some ballads there, but not many.

Argh, now I have "Hotel California" and the Beastie Boys song "Car Thief" (which samples the drum fill) stuck in my head simultaneously.

Hopefully you're not planning to operate any heavy machinery.
