"Goodbye Caroline" by Aimee Mann is the last word in lost California dream songs. Wilson Brother might also be interested in the soundtrack to the 1972 movie "Welcome to L.A." It amounts to a song cycle called "The City of the One Night Stands."

"Okie" is a slur used by California natives to denigrate Dustbowl migrants who came to California in the 30s from Oklahoma, the Texas panhandle and elsewhere. The Joads, essentially, though apparently Steinbeck vastly overplayed the extent of the crisis and the size of the migration. Nonetheless, a lot of them did come, and they settled primarily in the southern and eastern parts of the Central Valley, in the High Desert, and in the Inland Empire.

Bakersfield is a lot like Texas and Oklahoma. It's hot. It's dry. The main industries are (or were) oil, cattle and farming. Everyone with a little cash drives a huge, top of the line Ford or Chevy truck. Country music is very popular. It's hard to say whether the Okies settled there because it felt like home or if, by settling there, they made it like home.

Fourth on Warren. His mail used to come to my apartment building when I lived off Melrose. I thought he might live in the same building until a friend told me she got his mail too where she lived.

Jefferson Airplane, anyone? Is Grace Slick from CA, or did she just end up in Mill Valley?

The Doors...

She was born somewhere else (Illinois I think?) but her parents moved to the Penninsula when she was in high school.

Last I heard of her she was chasing imaginary people off of her property with a shotgun. Bad Marin Music: Journey Night Ranger I remember going to see Sublime at the Cactus Club in San Jose. They sucked then and continued to for their entire ride. My High School English teacher was Robbie Krieger's guitar teacher. He was his English teacher as well. The Doors peobably qualify. Jim Morrison lived for a bit in Los Altos and RK was from Menlo Park or Atherton.

Better than Phil Spector, who apparently hits his targets, with all the attendent legal consequences.
