The mourning dove is heavily hunted in my part of the country. I recall in my mother's home town, they would suspend their ban on in-town hunting for one day a year and hundreds of shooters lined a bridge, plinking doves and their pigeon kin from the top of an old mill.

Doves are actually pretty tasty; one needs to eat a dozen or so, though, to be sated.

Grilled, baked, roasted.
Usually with sauces; sometimes a marinade.

edit: I was surprised to see dove hunting is illegal in some states.

Am I the only one who thought "Pygmy Mudhatch?"

If you've not seen the Charlie's Angels movies...I guess you wouldn't get the reference.

I hear those birds around here but I've always thought it was an owl. The call is distinctive and pleasant, may the mourning dove continue to thrive!

This bird has nothing on the Asian Koel. The male is a beautiful bird that makes pure poetry. The female mightn't be as attractive, but she can make a wider range of sounds (not including the unique mating call of the male).
