Dear forum,

I am going to be getting several fully canvassed suits. I have it narrowed down to three places in Saint louis where I will be buying canvassed suits and custom made shirts.

1.) brooks brothers Golden Fleece. I think we all know what to expect here.

2.) a place called bespoke apparel. They will measure you in store and help you select cloth and have a tailor out of the area sew the suit together. They have several hundred fabrics to choose from.

3.) a place called expert alterations where a tailor who has been at the store for 30 years will measure you and sew the suit in site for you. He has received excellent reviews on Yelp but it looks mostly for alteration work. I called him in the phone and he said he would be happy to make suits and shirts for me and would do a great job.

Any thoughts here on which way to proceed on getting my canvassed suits made for me would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry man, but that would scare me away more than anything. I don't consider either of those guys well dressed. Joe Montana endorsed Sketchers shape ups....

If those are the three options you're going to limit yourself to, I'd go with Brooks Brothers during a good sale. As Murlsquirl said, Brooks Brothers at full retail is not a good value.

Made to Measure from a tailor you don't have any experience with can just go so wrong in so many ways. Plus it's time consuming and expensive.

Best bet would be to do a little bit a research here on the forum about various suit brands. Then find a good deal on a reputable brand on the internet.

I contacted a department store that stocks canali and will do a made to measure starting at 1650. Any thoughts on this?

Can you point me in the right direction as far as suit brands?

Thanks,

This is a good starting point for research on suit brands. Canali would be preferable to Brooks Brother, in my opinion. Suit Supply is a good budget option. Is there a reason you want to do made to measure? Unless you've got an out of the ordinary build, like a 10 inch drop, there's probably a ready to wear brand that would fit with minor alterations and at a lower price point than made to measure.

As far as the quality of suit supply's suits how are they? Are they fully canvassed or fused? If I wanted s top quality brand this is what you would recommend?

Maybe that's the route that I will go, is order a size for myself and have a tailor alter it the way I like it. Thoughts?

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
