I need a new pair of shoes for a pretty serious job interview and it's time to step it up from the ~$250ish dress shoes I have been wearing for the past few years (Cole Haan, Ecco, etc). I can see the difference with the higher end shoes, but there are so many options I could use some help narrowing it down. I'd like to keep it around the $500 range for now if possible (at least until I get past the interview stage).
I am wrapping up graduate school and going into a relatively conservative field, so I am not looking for anything trendy or fashion forward, I am looking for classic conservative dress shoes that can last me years. I am thinking black cap toe or perforated cap toe lace ups to wear with a new charcoal Brooks Brothers suit.
I initially thought I would get a pair of Ferragamos but, unlike the loafers I saw, their cap toe models did not suit my feet well. They were too long and narrow for my foot, and I couldn't find any size/width combo that worked well for me. They weren't completely terrible, but for this price range I did not want to settle on a pair of shoes that did not fit me well.
I was wondering what people on this forum think of the Brooks Brothers shoes (and/or their Peal & Co line) in this category? I gather from some searching that their shoes are made by various manufacturers depending on the model. Which would be the good ones to get and which would be the ones to avoid? And, if that is the case should I not just get the shoes directly from the real manufacturer and not from BB if they simply slap their name on them?
What brands should I look at? I have heard about Church, is that the best option for these criteria? I see that C&J is mentioned a lot on this site, but have never heard of it before, do I need to be enlightened? I thought Allen Edmonds was good, but it seems people on this site don't think so... I'd love to hear why they might be OK or why to avoid them?
Thanks in advance for the advice!
