Is this the best way to go ? Playstation 3 vs a Blueray player ?
I saw that there is now a separate remote available to operate the Playstation Blueray player alone.

I think the consensus is that the PS3 offers one of the cheapest ways to do Blu Ray, with the added bonus of being able to play games too. I'm thinking about the white one right now.

It's probably the best BD player you can get. The only downside right now is that it doesn't decode DTS-HD MA internally, but many people hope that will come with a future firmware update.

The remote control for it works over Bluetooth, so it cannot be learned by a universal remote. Nyko makes a little USB infrared receiver and remote for the PS3 that can be learned, but you can't turn the PS3 on or off with it.

Unless a) you are an extreme videophile or b) you never plan on playing any games, PS3 is currently the way to go for Blu Ray.

I just got Blade Runner for Christmas and can't wait to pop it in mine.

my family uses it strictly as a blu-ray player in our home theater, and it works perfectly. the only drawback, as mentioned above, is that it can't be learned by a universal remote since it is bluetooth. you can't beat the price (literally), and if your a gamer then its a no brainer.

I'm waiting for mine. I redeemed it using credit card loyalty points. I had a walk around HMV here looking for movies that I want to watch again on BD but couldn't find any, any recommendations? I was going to use dvdboxoffice.com again for my purchases online, or is there a better alternative now?

Planet Earth (though I have it on HD-DVD)
Ratatouille
Oldboy
Tekkon Kinkreet
Troy: Director's Cut
Die Hard Series

etc.

edit: Found a list on Amazon of Blu-ray exclusives to watch, most of which are crap. Some of the better ones -

Rocky Balboa
The Descent
Kung Fu Hustle
Big Fish
The Patriot
Casino Royale

Cheers. I picked up my PS3 in white yesterday and bought a third party component lead (I was an early adopter and my HDTV doesn't have HDMI!) for 1080i. Came with a free game, Ridge Racer 7 which looks and plays decent enough. No movies yet.

I'm in the UK and was going to wait to see if the PS3 comes down any further in price over the next couple of months, but impatience is getting the better of me and am itching to get hold of a Blu-ray player!

Too lazy to look it up. What's PS3 going for in the US? Any price drop anticipated?

I think it's 399 for the 40 GB hard drive and 499 for the upgrade version with 80 GB and I don't know what else. They both come with movie or game I believe. Oh and the 5 free Blu Ray by mail is probably still on. I haven't heard of any upcoming drops and since that price reflects a drop and the holidays are over I wouldn't expect to see one. You in the market? I have the HD add on for my 360. Picture quality is great.
