I'm looking for a decent pair of shoes to wear with jeans and a dress shirt that can also be worn with slacks. Actually, I'm really surprised how long this is taking. Anyway, I've been thinking of the following two shoes:

Cole Haan Clayton in chestnut

Florsheim Gallo in cognac

My jeans are pretty faded now (505's), but I guess I can go get some new pairs that look pretty blue...I'm trying to step up my style ;-)

Yes.

People on here are wearing shell cordovan longwings with jeans so I don't see why not.

The quality of the AE's are far above the ColeHaan's and Florsheims. Made in the USA. Goodyear welt. etc.

I'd go for Bourbon or Dark brown. Probably dark brown as I think it's a little more versatile and understated.

I'm thinking the Cole Haan look better, but the Florsheim probably are more comfortable and do better in cold weather. I was also looking at Rockport and Ecco. I really like the idea of a derby.

Thanks OlafG, I'll look into the AE's too.

None of the shoes you mentioned are good quality shoes.

Well, can you get good quality shoes for under $150? The AE Kenilworth are $250 on sale, which is a bit steep. Also, if you read the reviews, the AE is prone to bowing and losing its shape after just a few months...so they look beautiful, but do they last?

Quality shoes command money. AE losing its shape? This is the first I've heard of that...unless you mean they flex and form to your stride, which is normal. Do they last? They are Goodyear welted so you can have a cobbler resew the soles multiple times and have them last a decade with no issues. This is something that can't be said about cheaper shoes like the Kenneth Cole you're looking at.

AEs are a great value when bought on sale. There is a reason why they have an official appreciation thread on the CM section.

Welcome to the world of fine footwear:

Entry level = AE.
Mid tier = Alden, Carmina, Crockett and Jones, etc. ($500-900)
High tier = GG, JL, etc. (anything that costs over $1k)

Allen Edmonds Cascade boots in Brown can be had for $159 as seconds (I picked up a pair during the last sale) -- you can find picks of the boot here. Black Hills in Walnut might also fit the bill. Both are definitely more on the casual side, if that's what you're looking for. They have rubber soles, but are still recraftable.
