I'm leaving for Atlanta tomorrow and staying downtown in the Hyatt for five nights. Where are some good, fun places to eat dinner or go for drinks that aren't too far from there? (say a mile or so)

There is a Chick-fil-A in the food court of the Peachtree Center that's pretty good.

Srsly, downtown ATL is pretty dead after dark. I would just hop on the Marta and go to Buckhead for much better choices and ambience.

Go to Richard Blaise's place. If you don't I won't like you anymore. Also, please write about it when you do. Thank you.

Stats is a sports bar not far from Cenntenial Park (300 Marietta St NW to be exact). You can get a table with your own personal tap in the middle of it with whatever beer you want. Probably a good place to catch the NC game tomorrow...if you get there early enough.

downtown is slowly coming to life, but it's mostly a business/convention crowd, very few locals (who have a pay-for-parking phobia)

you'll just miss the opening of BLT steak & W hotel

http://maps.atlantadowntown.com/go/blt-steak

this is new and trendy, but their website is down? http://www.yelp.com/biz/room-atlanta

mellow mushroom is nearby (good pizza/beer place)

a short walk to centennial olympic park/aquarium area has ruth's chris steak house and legal sea foods (both chains, of course)

this is new, near acquarium: http://www.yelp.com/biz/luckie-food-lounge-atlanta

this is about a 1 mile walk towards downtown, but not sure what to expect: http://www.yelp.com/biz/maxim-prime-atlanta

that's a start.... atlanta is not fascinating place to visit (but a great place to live).

The Brickstore (in Decatur, short MARTA ride away) is one of the best beer bars in the world (Seriously).

Two Urban Licks just outside of Downtown is nice.

Sidebar is Downtown's "neighborhood bar".

Then of course there is STATS (as mentioned)

Manuel's which is very close to 2UL.

Really though your best bet would be to go to Little 5 Points (en route you will pass 2UL and Manuel's) but will have the most success. The Vortex, the Porter Beer Bar, Euclid Avenue Yacht Club, and Brewhouse are all solid options.

FYI: L5P is the "bohemian" area of town.

+1 for Brick Store Pub...don't know how I didn't mention that. Easy to get to on MARTA, even easier if you have a car.

I ate at Maxim Prime last year while staying at the hotel that houses the restaurant. Despite the association with Maxim, I actually really enjoyed the meal. The food and drinks both were inventive and nicely made. I was surprised, however, at how small the dining room was.

FWIW, this restaurant was set up by the NY company responsible for the China Grill restaurants and other popular places.

I would suggest getting on Marta riding up to 15th. there is a really good thai place there in Colony Square called Tamarind Seed. also across the street there is a solid afterwork drink place called Tap. On 7th street a really good Italian place called Ecco.

Moral of the story leave downtown and head up towards midtown.

I keep thinking Bone's should be great, but each time I leave I feel like I didn't get my money's worth. Maybe because I am a prime rib man and prefer Houston's.
