Giorgio Fedon 1919: Classic Leathergoods and Accessories Made in Italy

One of the highlights of Pitti83 was finding interesting non-fashion items, ranging from perfumes to socks to leather accessories. My charge was to find unique items that were high quality, relatively accessible in terms of price (or at least had a good price-to-value ratio), and were distinctive without being too garish. One that fits all of these criteria is the Italian leather brand GIORGIO FEDON.

What I like: Fedon is a full-range accessories business with a long history and a wide range of styles, relatively accessible pricing, and classic designs without stuffiness or pretension. In addition to bags and belts are stationery and leather cases for glasses, phones, and computers. They have a large distribution network with access to seasonal sales, so even fashion fans on a budget can get a nice bag at a decent price (Yoox, for example, regularly offers good deals on the brand). I especially like their business bags: decent leathers, made in Italy construction, and reasonably priced for the quality (anywhere from $400-700). Another detail are subtle hints of color: while all bags come in classic brown or black, take a look at their trademark bright yellow-orange or (this season) a lovely plum purple.

What I don’t: While Fedon is a good go-to brand flying under the radar, they are trying hard to expand new lines into new markets, including celebrity collaborations that seem targeted purely for publicity in the emerging Asian markets rather than to create a better bag. As well, some of their classic lines can look a little dated, with sometimes disappointing choices in terms of hardware or quality of the bag's lining.

Overall: There is a lot to like with Fedon, given their extensive history, their wide range of business and travel styles, the accessible pricing, and the hints of fun and color. When Prada or Gucci get nearly $3,000 for a lackluster, glued together business bag and Hermes gets enough to buy a decent used car, a well-made Italian bag for less than $1000 becomes more and more appealing.

I like how they give all their collections regular names, but for the women's line, it's called the "Vanity Collection."

    Well played.
