Here's a NYT article on how Wolfe pimped his ride, with matching spats no less.

How would you pimp your ride to reflect your sartorial inclination?

Well, the word 'pimp' certainly seems to fit. That's one expression of vanity that deserves a bonfire of its own.

I would have suspected Tom Wolfe would drive a vintage auto instead of something tacky like that.

But then it wouldn't have power windows.

What is the car, anyway? I have a colleague--all vintage clothing all the time--and he drives a Chrysler 300. As soon as I saw it pull up one day I knew it had to be his. It has a very vintage feel to it. And, yes, it has power windows. [IMG]

Who wants power windows when you can have craftsmanship? Besides, Tom Wolfe uses a typewriter.

It appears to be a Cadillac.

It's a Cadillac, and an ugly one at that. Modern cadillacs are completely devoid of the post-WW2 era culture that makes the brand attractive.

I have to say I kinda like new Cadillacs. The one Mr. Wolfe has up there is the DTS. It does has a pimpy vibe, which is the largest part of it's appeal to me. I would love to have a black one with a custom white leather interior.

Maybe he likes power steering and that Northstar system.

How can that ersatz bit of, to paraphrase Norma Desmond, spit and chrome compare with this:

There's no way that car has the Northstar system.

It has an aesthetic system which is infintely better than Bluetooth Northstar/Blueberry/Palm Pilot Ipod system.

Better says you. Wolfe may value the Northstar system more. Since it's his car, he should get to choose.

    I think you meant "Blackberry."

He lost his style, in the car.
