Pimp my room!

This is probably a repeat thread for you superfuturuers, but they were unsuccesful so far.

I am looking to really spruce/pimp/make my college room cool and I figured if anyone knew good ideas and cool stuff it would be here. I would be down to go with a whole theme maybe or just doing little bits from different themes.

So, any suggestions or links to blogs or even cool furniture websites would be very much appreciated.

My college room is getting a very roman/greek theme complete with 7-foot tall columns and hopefully a ceiling or wall mural.

'Themes' of some of my friends have included a tiki/tropical/beach style, shades of blue, shades of green. Originally I had planned on a wall-street/robber baron style of theme and was thinking about using old stock-certificates to create a mural and have an 'office' looking room, sorta decided against it.

If you want to do a theme you need to pick some cool stuff out of your life/hobbies/interests that you want to do a theme oriented towards.

Don't worry about "pimpin" your room. Worry about keeping it clean and smelling nice. Save your money for booze/other extracurricular activities

Is there a particular reason you want to decorate it? My 'theme' is spartan in that I have no decoration of any type, and everything in the room is functional. You have to move so frequently in college (at least I did) that decorating doesn't seem worth the effort.

EDIT: Just watched your video. No offense, but MIT students are such nerds.

my only dorm decorating advice is to use picture frames. unframed posters/pictures are sloppy.

I would say to go minimal. If you want to make a good impression; don't try too hard. shoot for something like having your furniture fall into a theme (like black, mahagany, white etc..) and leave it at that (don't buy those sets from ikea though-I know its tempting but people will know). another thing is that you should always have two kinds of shelving in your room. one for things you don't want people to see (undies, gun collection etc..) and one for things that you do want people to see (weightlifting tophies, keys to your porsche etc.) one other piece of advice is that you should make sure NOT to have anything in your room that you aren't directly related to. This means to take down the scarface poster and replace it with a painitng or even an enlarged photograph that you or a friend took. The things visible in your room should tell a story about you. if you can't find an object that says something about you; but you need it anyway (i.e. a bed) then that object should be quiet. And, even though I dissed ikea earlier, they've got a ton of gear that is really really cheap. once you know what you want, it'll be that much easier to sift through the stuff they have.

Ditch the band and movie posters. Go for a cohesive theme with your art. I collect communist propaganda posters.

Everything he said. Especially the part about your living space telling a story about you. Ikea is a great resource for getting some cheap basics that will last you through college and a few years beyond. Don't be afraid to use some colour too.

Don't make it look like a dorm room. Avoid all those brightly colored plastic things that everyone else is going to have.

Skip the posters, but put something on your walls. Paint is nice if you can do it. Mirrors, framed photos, and textiles are also great. White is your enemy.

Bring your own desk lamp.

Put a rug on the floor and vacuum it. Linoleum is way too institutional for a bedroom.

Get a decent desk chair. You're going to spend a lot of time in it, so get something comfortable that suits your style.

Don't do a "theme." Do a style.
