I think many of you spent your formative years in Midwestern supermarket bakeries. There's a whole 'nother world out there.

1000

Cassata

700

Tiramisu

1000

Diplomatico

1000

Sacher

1000

Caprese

1000

Zuppa Inglese

1000

Pear and Chocolate

1000

Black Forest Cake (no, not the one at the supermarket)

And then there are some of the very fine domestic offerings:

1000

Strawberry Shortcake

1000

Carrot

Finally, my favorite refreshing easy summertime dessert...

1000

Jell-O Cake.

And then one could argue that all quickbreads are actually cakes (they really are) which means cornbread, zucchini bread, biscotti, etc...

But deep-dish pizza is good, too. So that's not really helping us.

Pie is so much better I'm letting it sit next to my bottle of wine. Cake doesn't get that privilege.

Not seen: me demolishing said pie.

Hmm, I voted for pie without seeing why's illustrated pitch for cake. I'm now second-guessing my selection (although I don't think any cake tops a really good pecan pie).

I had pecan pie for lunch yesterday. Sure was good, but cake is better.

When I was a kid, I always had pumpkin pies at my [september] birthday. Because...who wants birthday cake when you could have pumpkin pie?

I must admit though...the last several birthdays have been celebrated with a Basque cake from the Bristol (thanks to kyle or ron or whoever was like "trust me, its a cake but its fricking good"). But that took an esteemed pastry chef to create a cake that can even compete with a pie I can make in my home kitchen. Carrot cake can be pretty damn good too, but lets be honest, thats mostly about the frosting.

But for the most part, who chooses cake over pie? Supermarket pies are still fully edible, supermarket cakes are gross. The worst pie is definitely better than the worst cake.
Maybe the best cake might have something on the best pie--I propose that the leaders of Team Pie and Team Cake present me with a sample of the best they can create and I will decree one the winner.
