I've got a blue-gray heavy herringbone donegal that I'm thinking of doing into some kind of outerwear rather than a sportscoat. But I'm confused regarding the model. Any ideas would be gratefully received.

The Grenfell mac on the Armoury that is getting all the SF love is a great starting point. I think that but cut shorter to a 3/4 length in a heavier wool would look great. Hopefully you agree. I think this photo shows the mac with it tucked underneath itself to a shorter length:

Thanks, that's a good start actually. I'm also thinking about double-breasted designs. Not quite a peacoat, but something in that vein. I recall a picture of Luciano Barbera skiing in an interesting short double breasted number, but I can't seem to find it any more.

I think start off with a sportcoat, convert the pockets to a super slanted version like in the grenfell mac, then do a more outerwear-like collar, put a breast pocket. Maybe no vents or center vent. Instead of cutaway quarters like in a sportcoat or a suit, let it go down straight just like in the grenfell.

Or make it a double breasted with peak lapels. But not sure if you can have the very slanted pockets as featured on the grenfell.

I'm actually in the market for some outerwear but don't like anything I see. Might have to go bespoke route.

Thanks for the suggestion. Now I'm beginning to think that I should get the sort of sportcoat that can be worn over a chunky sweater, perhaps with an action back and a tab-fastened collar (three patch pockets, single vent, one-button cuffs, swelled edges, lapped seams: that sort of thing). Thoughts/pictures? Does such a coat necessarily look too roomy if one wears it over a shirt with no sweater?
