Picking out jewelry for GF?

I'd like to pick up a decent (but not excessive) necklace or earnings for my girlfriend's birthday. I can work out a style she'd like. However, I have no ability to tell good jewelry from cheap jewelry. I understand differences in metals (silver vs white gold), but have no idea why one necklace is $80 and another is $800 (or $8,000). I assume she can tell the difference (like we can with suits). Anyone have suggestions to understand what I'm buying and what's she'll think of it?

Obviously, this is a thinly veiled GF brag. However, I can't be the only guy with this problem. :)

Why didn't you drag an aunt, or another woman with years of shopping experience?

I've mentioned this elsewhere, but if you like pearls, pearlparadise.com is the place to go. They have pearls at all different quality levels (and frankly I think their better pearls are better than or at least equal to Mikimotos) and their prices blow anyone else out of the water. Service is great, selection is infinite, and the price is right. Highly recommended.

I actually purchased some today. Do these ship out of the US? I need it here by the 25th so I payed the extra $15 for express shipping.

My girl likes www.sundancecatalog.com for jewelry. She's into art and doesn't like your conventional flashy jewelry so if you think that would go well with your gf's taste check it out.

She says they have more unique pieces than the cheesy stuff that's most often found in stores. Some of their items are overpriced and not that interesting, but there are quite a few really beautiful handmade pieces.

IIRC they're in Cali.

Mrs. Thomas had a few James Avery pieces when we met, and that's been my go-to ever since.

I bought an ex-GF some pearls for Xmas some years ago. She loved them. She actually wore them on her wedding day(to someone else) several years later!!!
Every woman should have a nice set of pearls!!!

I got my GF diamond studs from bluenile for her bday. She is absolutely over the moon about them. They're the perfect size for her and she can't help but compare them to the ones she sees on other women (the ones I got her have a very high quality sparkle, clarity, and color) and notice that most aren't close to as nice. Pretty darn good prices too. Great for a budget.

I bought an engagement ring yesterday (I'm proposing on Saturday) and I asked one my gf's friends to help me choose it. I'll let you know if this is good advice...

Men usually have problems with picking out jewelry for their GFs because of being inattentive to details. Yes, it's does matter is it silver or gold - have a look firstly what does you girl usually wear. For example i hate gold

It also does matter what's the shape and the style of the thing you're going to buy... as to the prices - the same as with cloths. There are famous jewelry brands that cost more due to the name also.

The greatest story i heard about men trying to surprise their girls with jewelry presents happened to my friends. They were celebrating 5 years since marrige and the husband in front of all the guests presented his wife (which he really loves) very beautiful Tiffany earrings. Guess what. His wife doesn't even have holes in her ears

Be more attentive to details while picking out jewelry, guys

how about getting stuff copied in hong kong? they're real diamonds and gold anyways. just like a chan/ a man suit i guess. some fancy jewelry/cocktail rings can even cost over $1000. i've always been bothered by that. i mean they're just semi precious stones. i'm sure that would be close to tiffany prices or at least on your way there.
