This guy is probably third in line for the "supreme dictator" to pull such stunt. The whole scene looks like a civilized gathering--beautiful scenery, kids running around, men in suits, and bam! you see a guy taking a leak in the community pool/river.

North Korea has been allowing some Americans to visit during the Ariang festival each year. It seems to be easier if you're an expatriate though. I'd really like to go someday, but visiting the "People's Republic" costs around $3,000.

Also fascinating is the unfinished Ryugyong Hotel. A 105-story empty shell of a building, it was supposed to be the world's largest hotel, but has sat uncompleted and vacant for over 15 years. Now the North Korean tour guides won't even acknowledge its existence. This is the sort of uniquely bizarre experience you go to North Korea for.

Right, because all the German, British and Austrailian toursists I see here on a regular basis are bastions of style and manners.

This is the site I was referring to: http://www.1stopkorea.com/index.htm?....htm~mainframe It is quite clear why Americans are restricted to travel there: sandals and shorts. I think the man in the middle thought he was a Boy Scout Leader.

Hyundai opened a resort and offers trips to Mt. Baekdu (I think). Americans and Koreans can go, and it is fairly popular. You are kept on a tight leash, with little interchange with the locals, though. Trips to Pyongyang are harder to arrange. Also, remember that all that hard cash you spend is going to go toward tankers of Hennessy for Dear Leader.

We could all take lessons from this man:

"North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, portrayed as a man of god-like wisdom and talents at home, has defined the characteristics of the ideal woman - beauty, a big heart and a communist fighting spirit.

"Of course women have to be beautiful in appearance, but it's not the whole of true beauty," Kim was quoted as saying in the pro-Pyongyang periodical Joguk.

The diminutive Kim, 65, known for his bouffant hair-do, jumpsuits and pot belly, is a widower. Also, two actress companions who gave birth to his three known sons, have passed away.

"It is the women who can give up their youth, love and family for the fatherland and the nation ... those who can put the mass and their comrades before themselves for the happiness of the people and the prosperity of the nation that are true beauties," he told the magazine published in Japan and made available in Seoul on Wednesday.

North Korea's official media likes to call Korean women the flowers of the peninsula who honour their country by marrying wounded soldiers and are able to fight off 100 invaders while achieving breakthroughs in science."

It can't be for the women I reckon.

It's like visiting a time capsule. There isn't going to be anymore communist monarchies.

Completely true - Dear Leader has an affinity for good spirits and hollywood made movies.

Just on a side note, Americans and Koreans can make arrangements as stated above. My colleagues have gone and said it was very boring. All they did was get drunk of the local spirits. N.Korean soju < S.Korean soju.

Both are still garbage.

Kim Jong Il is such a sick ****. How the hell can a guy like him who tortures and rapes women as he pleases can talk about how great their women are. I would love to castrate him, fact.

I miss rainy days in northern Laos where basically all there was to do was eat fruit and drink beer.

Janes reports that North Korea is in a bad way -- in a really bad way -- bad even by its own abysmal standards. "Kim Jong-Il's regime could collapse within six months, bringing chaos to North Korea, observers and intelligence sources in Asia have told Jane's. ... The centrally controlled economy has also now ceased to function and the food distribution system is near breaking point. With loyalty to the regime at an all-time low, another sign of trouble is the regime's diminishing ability to prevent people from leaving the country." But the most alarming sign involves Kim Jong-Il himself.

"Tellingly, the 'Dear Leader' is in the process of moving financial resources to ensure that his assets are portable should he have to go into exile, according to some sources." Kim, who amended the North Korean constitution in 1996 to declare himself "president for eternity" is estimated by the CIA to have "$5 billion in Swiss bank accounts, six villas in Europe, one in Russia and one in China".

He should be near the top of the league of billionaire progressive socialist leaders, fearlessly leading their masses to the worker's parodies. By comparison, Robert Mugabe has an unspecified amount of money in "the British Virgin Islands and the Isle of Man. He also owns large properties in Britain" according to Robert Rotberg of the Harvard Kennedy School. Fidel Castro may in fact be bringing up the rear of this august group, with an estimated worth of $900 million, according to a Forbes magazine report, which only puts him on par with the Queen of England.
