just wondering, a pair of dress pants, worn with sports coat or as a suit, where should they come to around the ankle??

there must be some kind of standard 'smart way' to have the pants at the ankle/top of shoe...

what inspired this topic?? well, i was getting my pants tailored and i kept arguing with the woman on the length, she said it was fine but i wanted it shorter!!! maybe i'll post a pic when i get round to it

Tell me this:

How tall are you?
What weight are you?
What waist size are you?
How long are your feet?
How wide are the pants at the knee?
How wide are the pants at the hem?
Do you favor slim fitting or more relaxed clothing?

If you get them tapered you can wear them with medium break - so that they hit your shoe half way up from the sole - to no break, so they just touch the top of your shoe at the front crease of your pants. Any wider than 8 1/2" and you're better off with medium break. In either event a cuff of 1 3/4" will add weight to the hem.

It's a "rule" that some people follow and others do not. Personally, I think that a cuff on pleated pants helps them "hang" better because the excess fabric would otherwise flop around all over the place, but it really has less to do with the presence (or absence) of pleats than the size of the opening at the bottom. You can have flat-front trousers with wide legs, or pleated trousers with quite tapered legs. On the same note, I find that larger leg openings look better with very slight or no break, because anything more causes the fabric to "pool" around the ankles. Smaller leg openings can look all right with more break, but it comes down to personal preference in the end.

You can break this with impunity - pants look better with a cuff, especially slim.

I'd disagree with this - wide pants with no break flap around too much - they sit better with a little break.
