This is so ******* delusional, do you realize how much more servers earn by tips than if they were paid straight hourly wages? It has nothing to do with kindness. Tips are a tax dodge, always have been, always will be. You want to attack someone go after the tax man.

It was a tax doge pre-1990s, but the rules changes and made it so that restaurants report the waiters income as a percentage of sales.

Not to say that some tips are not shielded today, but it's greatly diminished, especially because you almost never see cash anymore. This might have changed further since I was in the game, but I believe it's more or less the same.

Sure, I'm no expert in someone else's reality. My opinion simply comes from stories of acquaintances inside the restaurant industry of Boston. And I'm not privileged enough to frequent upscale places like those with michelin stars, hence my knowledge is limited; but it's still a fact of reality.

This will be my last reply. In MA the minimum wage is $11 an hour and employers must top up tipped employees if base + tips = < $11 an hour. Your "reality" is illegal.

Personally, I think this is a problem of an industry, where owners hope customers to subsidize their employees instead of paying a resonable salary.

You must have never worked in sales. Does this not also happen with things like commissions? What about bonuses? The company makes money (you know, FROM CUSTOMERS) and therefore divides amongst the workers. But I must be living in a dream...

Uber pays **** regardless

That's not really the point though. Waiting tables does too, but it is accepted because the majority of their income is through tipping. Uber drivers were working before the tipping feature so it was paying well enough that they were driving for it. My question is has Uber scaled back their wages or sharing or whatever with the expectation that people are making up the difference and more with tips.

Probably not, but with their rating system I would tip. It sucks, but the only time I Uber is when I'm out drinking so it is more than worth the extra bucks.

I was under the impression that they don't know "who" tips them and it doesn't affect individual ratings.
