My personal choice is the Visconti "Van Gogh" in black (it also comes in some wonderful marbled finishes):

It's heavy and substantial, which I like a lot. Montblanc are, to my mind, too flimsy.

At the upper reaches, both Dupont and Caran d'Ache make excellent pens with a certain type of beautiful and durable Chinese Lacquer. I think Dupont are a little overpriced, and I have it on high authority that Caran is every bit as good. I like the balance better too. At about AUD$800, it's my dream pen at present. I think they can be had overseas for much less....

Ditto pendemonium. I'm learning to use a foutain pen right now, have to get my hand used to it. Lots of crosswords and "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog."

I prefer vintage pens mainly because I enjoy flexible nibs. I would recommend an old waterman with overlay - you can have a variety of nibs. The lever filler mechanism is also pretty much foolproof (although I've had one 'friend' who flipped it asking 'what's this for?') and easy to repair.

Modern pens are okay if customized to italic/stubs but tend to devalue significantly - this may or may not be a problem for some. There is a wide choice availabe but they are not cheap. Some random/general thoughts:

Conway Stewarts are improving.
The Montblanc 149 is a classic pen but vintage ones are nicer.
Some italian pens are nice: Aurora (I always wanted an Afrika), Omas pens are good to look at but reliability can be an issue - I had a 360 that leaked.
The japanese makes are also worth considering eg Nakaya, Sailor, Platinum etc.

I own a Pelikan Sovereign 400, inherited from my late Grandfather. The model I've got has last been made this way in 1954, so it is at least 52 years old.
If i bought one today I would think about getting one in black, I have the classic green stripes:

I especially like the clip which resembles a Pelikan's beak (at least I think it's supposed to).
