Apologies if this has been discussed previously but I couldn't find anything...

Do people put pennies in their loafers any more?

OK... penny loafers were obviously designed to accept something in the 'saddle' part of the shoe. Even their name recognizes this fact. Has it become purely decoration?

You are mistaken. They were not 'designed to accept something'. It was a trend which lead to the 'coining' (fuck me) of the name.

Thanks for the info. Given their name I assumed they were designed to have a coin inserted into them.

So... a bit more research revealed some very good information already here...

...and that's why they're called Weejuns

a brief history of penny loafers

Seems there are a couple of theories as to why a coin was inserted into the shoe. Some say it was used to make a call home in an emergency. Others say that it was a way of indicating the dating status of someone. A coin in your shoe meant you were committed.

Anyway, I've learned something new today. I usually do on SF.
