have you tried that little place off of lex in the 60s? I also think you can call jeplus.com and see if they have it.

You know, I have never been to Tender Buttons. That is certainly a good place to check out, though I know they are supposed to be very pricey.

1) There is no better source.

2) They are just buttons, so how high could the cost be?

3) Given the unusual nature of what you want, you aren't going to have a lot of options anyway, so you will probably have to pay whatever price at which you find them.

There are maybe three or four good stories in the world. It doesn't matter who tells them. The stories are the same. And very old.

I am sure you are right - I do need to get there. M&J Trimmings has a lot of stuff as well. I really like the horn buttons Invertere uses on their overcoats. If I could find blond versions of those I would be happy. I am not sure I really want overcoat size. Especially in MOP. Dege used DB size buttons on my overcoat and that looked about right. But I want the option - I don't think I have seen MOP that size - the largest I have seen are the MOP ones on a DB seersucker suit and a DB silk sportcoat that I have.

No kidding. I think I always pay around $20-$30 for a set of buttons there. I always buy extras, just in case. They have horn overcoat buttons and I think I've seen pearl, but can't say for sure.

True. And it's mot like this is a DIY project anyway. I don't have to source anything. But I am curious.

TENDER BUTTONS
143 E 62nd St
New York, NY 10065

I've been there on two separate occasions and found exactly what I was looking for within minutes. They have an incredible selection. Price-wise it's not going to kill you. European horn suit-size buttons run around $4 a piece. MOP about the same. Suit sleeve-size buttons in horn are about $2. So I'm going to guess that large overcoat-size buttons will run you around $5-6 a piece?

I've outfitted two sport jackets with horn buttons (front buttons, sleeve buttons, and 2 extras of each) for around $40 each jacket. So I'm sure one overcoat won't be that much.

This place is guaranteed to have what you're looking for, and they can order for you if they don't.

While we are on the subject of buttons, let's focus now on some collar/lapel styles. Note the two broad alternatives for Foo's project. Standard DB and ulster, or turn-up style:

And my favorite overall version:

I am torn between the modern classic "orthodox" version which uses a more standard DB configuration and the more old-fashioned "ulster" syle which allows for a turned up storm collar. The standard DB certainly has a long sweep and more elegant look to it, but there is something very appealing about the turned up collar as illustrated in the last coat.

At present, my tailor has very strong orthodox leanings. He fought hard against a full-belt, being willing to consider it only when he could recall a past client who had one made that way (in the end, the half-belt one for extraneous reasons). He is doing the same on the lapels, pushing for a 6x2 button stance with a long DB sweep. He has conceded to make me paper collars and lapels in the ulster/turn-up style for my next fitting, along with the standard shape, so I can see what both the versions will look like. I am sure the contest will be rigged.

Is there a name for this style of lapel?

It looks as if it could be peaked if it were angled more upward, however they seem to point almost horizontally but not quite... Maybe it is peaked?
