Peak versus notch lapel suits & button color

I recently bought a trim, peak lapel, two-button suit at the Nordstroms sale and was wondering what are the 'stylistic' differences between peak and notch lapel suits? Assuming the peak is more stylish and probably more likely to go out out style soon, but are there any other differences?

My second question is whether the color of the suit button suggests anything about the accompanying shoe color? Just curious since the suit I mentioned above is light gray with black buttons but would go great with brown or burgundy shoes.

Thanks in advance.

I give Manton credit for the return of the peak-lapel 2B suit jacket. His book goes on about how this is good and timeless. The button question is interesting. I don't think it matters. You don't want to be too matchy matchy anyway.

I generally agree with Snr. Antongiovanni. However, I would like to qualify things by expressing a general preference for the standard V notch lapel over the double breasted style lapel (or peaked lapel in American English). The reasons are as follows:

1. They are more elongating
2. They are more slimming
3. Simplicity is a wonderful thing

DB styled lapels are more formal are best reserved for more formal coats - where black Oxfords are the only shoe type acceptable. DB styled lapels are an abomination on sports coats, or informal styled coats such as in lighter colours, browns, greens, checks/plaids, linen/cotton etc. Forum group think currently dictates that DB styled lapels are more "dandyish" and that every SB coat must be made this way.

Thanks...hopefully I'll get a few years out of it before it becomes a halloween outfit.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
