I went navy from Schott NYC. Thanks for your advice.

If I don't like it I can always return.

I have always been partial to the oxford grey. But you cannot lose with Navy.

It's gotta be navy, though grey is great too. Never been a fan of black coats, they don't seem as versatile as navy and just don't look as good with khakis or jeans to me.

Got the coat - it's great. But the navy is so dark its black. The tag says navy but I've been comparing it to other black objects in daylight and it looks the same- It's black. Maybe it was mistagged. Anyone else ever have that problem?

It's true navy (darker than midnight blue).

i say forget schott and sterlingwear, buy a vintage or used one on ebay. i think peacoats look nice when the melton wool is broken in and has had a bit of a beating to it. i bought one from the 1960's off of ebay for $50 fits like a dream.

I asked the schott people what the deal is and here is what they said:

"You are correct you can not tell the difference between the black and navy color. We make the traditional peacoat to the Military Spec color Navy which is this color that appears black."

I don't really see the point in advertising black then, but I'm happy either way.

It's blue. I've been wearing the same USN pea coat for almost 7 years now, and where the fabric is starting to wear I'm starting to see that it is actually a very very dark blue.

Buying a USN peacoat is a bit like buying some raw denim that fades at a glacial pace.

PS, don't remember who posted but camel/tan does look amazing as a peacoat (or really any wool coat) color.

On a side note, I'm in the market for a USN peacoat, any suggestions?

I did too, and like almost all vintage clothing of any caliber it is amazing. But something's amiss on eBay and they're getting freaking hard to find!

Not to sound like a conspiracy theorist...but remember when Gloverall bought all the military surplus duffle coats and proceeded to corner the market?
