is there any difference between the RL and the JCrew one, other than the brand and price tag?

I haven't seen either in-store, but they look identical online to me.

There is a huge pea coat thread over in SW&D if you want to browse 100 pages of all things pea coat - as well as the usual vindictive spew that tends to come out of people over there.

I haven't looked at the J Crew. The RL is a relatively heavy and warm coat. I wore it with a nice scarf and stayed plenty warm on Black Friday when it was 20 degrees outside.

A used traditional Navy peacoat is best.

Actually, RL Purple Label.

Kiton is too fragile.

On the budget end, Kenneth Cole has decent ones you can pick up for $80-100 typically at Filene's Basement. I've had one in black for a couple of years that I've been happy with. They've got some nylon in them -- 10% I think -- which isn't unusual for pea coats, the remainder of course being wool.
