Hey guys, I recently graduated with a B.Design (Graphic Design) ... and until I get full-time job, I work part-time (non-design related), and freelance on the side. Until now, I've only had "small" clients - paying cash in hand ... but now I've just completed my first job for a possible "big" client ... the question I was asked - how would I like payment? Now I have a silly question, I replied "bank transfer or cheque, whatever is easier" ... but I only realised afterwards ... are there any security issues I should be aware of - in handing over my account details to the client - for him to make the transfer?! Thanks in advance.

They cant realy do anything with the acount information to take your money only pay you. Could be a good idea to have separate acounts for your buisness and maybee start to think about if you need to pay taxes and stuff for your buisness when it grows or you could have un unwelcome suprise later on.

Thanks for your reply mate. Yea I thought it would be secure, but just second-guessed myself for a second. I've been considering creating a separate account for some time now, but find it harder to keep track of savings/budgets etc. when I have multiple accounts (currently have 2) ... cheers for the heads up, but yea, I've already decided I'll be keeping a "reserve" after each payment - for tax-time.

Send them an invoice for your work and get them to cut you a cheque. You don't have to give them any super sensitive info. That's the norm for pretty much every business out there.

I discovered that sending your statement/invoice in pdf file format to the person who authorizes and approves payment is prudent. Although electronic money transfers through banks is fast and efficient, many companies today still process a paper check.
